The Center for Student Success

The Center for Student Success (CSS) is dedicated to the academic achievement, support and engagement of all Stevenson University students. Located in Garrison Student Union, the Center for Student Success uses a holistic approach with students that enables them to optimize their academic potential, persist in their studies, and complete their degrees.

CSS provides a wide variety of academic programming, resources and services, such as:

    Academic advising and course planning

    Academic coaching and mentoring

    Disability support services

    Individual and group tutoring

Student success coaching for all freshmen

Academic Advising

Academic Advising at Stevenson University is a free support service available to all degree-seeking students. Students are responsible for fulfilling degree requirements, but advisors are the assisting experts who can help students plan an efficient program of study. Advisors assist with a wide range of academic matters from selecting a major to planning for graduate school.

All first-time freshmen have an assigned Student Success Coach to help them navigate the many aspects of the college experience, including course planning and registration. Student Success Coaches work with each student to develop an individualized plan for their academic, professional, and personal success. Transfer students and continuing sophomores through seniors are assigned to faculty advisors who specialize in a single major. Faculty advisors assist students in a wide array of academic concerns and course planning while also providing students with career and internship guidance within their specific fields. Students who have not selected a major are assigned to advisors in the Office of Academic Advising.

Accessibility & Disability Services

Stevenson University provides reasonable accommodations to qualified students with documented disabilities. To establish eligibility for services, students must register with the Office of Accessibility & Disability Services (ADS) and provide current, appropriate documentation by a qualified provider. Eligibility for accommodations is determined on an individualized basis, based on the student’s documented need. The Office of Accessibility & Disability Services (ADS) can be reached at 443-352-5320 or ADS@stevenson.edu.

For the complete policy on Students with Disabilities, see University Policies located on the university website.

Academic Adjustments for English Learners

The Maryland Department of Education defines an English Learner as a student who a) comes from an environment where a language other than English is dominant, b) has sufficient difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language, and c) this difficulty may interfere with the student’s opportunity to learn successfully in classrooms where the language of instruction is English.

Stevenson University is committed to providing reasonable academic adjustments for students who are English Learners.  Such adjustments are designed to provide equal opportunity for students to access their education as they learn proficiency of the English language.

Students who are English Learners (EL) can request academic adjustments in their first 60 credits of study.  To be considered for academic adjustments under this policy, students must submit the Request for Academic Adjustments for English Learners Form and the required documentation to the Vice Provost, Student Success.  The request will be reviewed, and a decision rendered within 10 business days of the date all materials are received. Please note that completion of this form is not a guarantee that your request will be approved. Academic adjustments are approved on a semester-by-semester basis and cannot be implemented retroactively.

New Mustang Experience

The New Mustang Experience (NME) at Stevenson is an intentionally designed, cross-campus program that ensures students are receiving the support and encouragement they need to successfully transition to SU both academically and socially. The Center for Student Success collaborates with campus partners to develop programs for new students including Summer Orientation, Convocation, First-Year Seminar, and Student Success Coaching. Throughout these shared experiences, students connect with the Stevenson community, learn about the campus resources available to them, develop the skills necessary to be successful in college, and make a smooth transition to college life.
