Academic Adjustments for English Learners

The Maryland Department of Education defines an English Learner as a student who a) comes from an environment where a language other than English is dominant, b) has sufficient difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language, and c) this difficulty may interfere with the student’s opportunity to learn successfully in classrooms where the language of instruction is English.

Stevenson University is committed to providing reasonable academic adjustments for students who are English Learners.  Such adjustments are designed to provide equal opportunity for students to access their education as they learn proficiency of the English language.

Students who are English Learners (EL) can request academic adjustments in their first 60 credits of study.  To be considered for academic adjustments under this policy, students must submit the Request for Academic Adjustments for English Learners Form and the required documentation to the Vice Provost, Student Success.  The request will be reviewed, and a decision rendered within 10 business days of the date all materials are received. Please note that completion of this form is not a guarantee that your request will be approved. Academic adjustments are approved on a semester-by-semester basis and cannot be implemented retroactively.
